Winthrop Poppy, call name "Emma"

I'm glad to hear all the other puppies are doing well. Poppy "Emma" is settling in nicely, too! She was very busy when we got home yesterday and spent about 1-1/2 hours going from here to there in the house and yard before finally crashing for a short nap. Then she was up and on the move again for most of the rest of the evening. She ate her meals ravenously and slept in her crate without too much fuss; just woke up once needing to pee but then went right back to sleep until morning. She seems to understand about using the part of the yard I've designated as her potty area, and we've had no accidents so far. The only things that have fazed her are the big dogs barking next door, and seeing her reflection in a full length mirror (but this morning, she had gotten over her caution about the mirror and was trying to play with the "other puppy" -- very cute!).

We've been playing tug and practicing a little leash walking, and in the short time she's been here, she's already offering noticeably more sits for treats, tug sessions, etc., and she's staying with me a little better on leash this morning than yesterday. She's obviously very smart and picks up on things quickly! The main challenge we're having is that she seems to have very little frustration tolerance. She whines and cries if she doesn't get her meal right away, if she can't get to where she wants to go because she's on leash, if she wants to get out of her x-pen, if she can't get the food out of her stuffed Kong, etc. So far, I've just been trying to ignore her when she's whining and reinforce when she's offering some other more desirable behavior, and I'm hoping the whining will fade as she realizes it doesn't pay off. I'm also assuming this is partly due to her young age; I've never had a puppy this young before, so I'm not sure what is normal for a 9-week-old puppy. But, all in all, this is a minor issue that I'm sure we'll work through, and everything else is going very well! She seems more comfortable here today and is taking a nice, long nap right now.

Michael, Akiko and Poppy, called "Emma."

Emma at 10 weeks: 12 weeks:

Emma has been in a puppy class for 3 weeks and is doing very well with focusing on Akiko even with the distractions. She's meeting lots of different people, learning tricks and house manners!

March 26, 2011--1 year old! Akiko and Michael brought Emma to the Puppy Birthday Party at the sheep ranch, and she really got into the herding and the free play time with about 15 Border Collies!
